Spring in Japan is known for the blooming of cherry blossoms. In Okinawa, the cherry-blossom front gradually moves from north to south once the flowers start to bloom in the mid of January every year.
These cherry blossom trees in Okinawa are called “Kanhi Sakura” or “Hikan Sakura” in Japanese and native to Taiwan and southern China. The flowers are shaped like a bellflower in deep pink and about 1.3 centimeters across. They are not light pink with petals fluttering like “Someiyoshino”, the typical cherry blossom in Japan.

日本の春と言えば「桜」。
沖縄では例年1月中旬頃より桜が色づき始めると“桜前線”は北から徐々に南下していきます。
この沖縄の桜は、台湾や中国南部が原産のカンヒザクラ（寒緋桜）や・ヒカンザクラ（緋寒桜）と呼ばれ、花は直径1.3cmほどの楕円形で、俯いて咲く壺型の桜で、濃いピンク色が特徴です。
ソメイヨシノのような淡いピンクのヒラヒラと薄い花びらの桜ではありません。
例年1月末の桜の開花に合わせ県内各地で「桜まつり」が始まります。
